Assess the wound
Look at exudate level (none / light / moderate / heavy) and wound depth (shallow / moderate / deep / cavity). These two factors drive the category choice.

On the wound
Primary contact layers. These sit directly on the wound bed, protect granulation tissue, and reduce pain and trauma at dressing change.

- Moderate to heavy exudate needs to be locked away from periwound skin
- Reducing dressing change frequency is a clinical or operational priority
- Compression therapy, fixation, or post-operative coverage is required
